Caring for pastel artworks: What collectors need to know
Pastel paintings are stable and lightfast if stored and handled correctly. Pure pigment does not fade easily – most damages come from physical handling errors, not material weakness.
Storage essentials
Store vertically or on a stable rack – never leaning loosely.
Avoid contact with other objects or boards that can transfer pressure.
Keep between 18–24°C and with moderate humidity.
Glass and framing
Use museum glass or high-grade anti-reflective glazing.
Ensure a gap between glass and surface – no pressure on the art.
A solid, closed backing protects from dust and particles.
UV and light
Pastel is lightfast, but the paper or support may not be.
Avoid direct sunlight for long periods.
LED lighting is safest for long-term hanging.
Handling
Never blow away dust – this can smear pigment.
Transport upright and firmly fixed.
For shipping, double-boxing is recommended.
Long-term maintenance
Annual check: frame tight, no humidity inside, no dust migration.
If something needs cleaning, let a conservator handle it.
Frequent mistakes
Displaying under halogen light
Loose frames without backing
Storing flat with weight on top
Touching the surface directly
Summary
Proper framing and stable environmental conditions protect pastel artworks for generations. Material stability is high – care is mainly about avoiding mechanical damage.Write your text here...
