Plums and Silver Jug

I have always been drawn to the tension between the transient and the enduring. In this work, I set the cool permanence of silver against the fleeting ripeness of summer plums — one will outlast centuries, the other a week. That contrast is what first compelled me to arrange this composition.

I chose a near-black ground deliberately, in the spirit of the old masters. When you strip away ambient light, every highlight becomes a decision — the warm glow inside the jug's mouth, the cold gleam along its fluted belly, the soft bloom dusting each plum's skin. I wanted the viewer's eye to travel that light slowly, from fruit to metal and back again.

A few plums have spilled from the bowl. I left them there intentionally — a nod to the vanitas tradition, a quiet suggestion that abundance and overripeness are never far apart. The branch of leaves trailing to the left is my anchor to the living world, a reminder that all of this began in an orchard, not a studio.
