The Attendant

One apple, one leaf, black ground.

Some relationships have no drama in them, only presence. The leaf didn't ornament the apple. It accompanied it. That work is done now, and what remains is the staying.

The apple needs nothing. It sits complete in itself, its skin catching light the way certain people hold a room, without effort, without even knowing. The leaf leans toward it, slightly, just enough.

That asymmetry is what I kept coming back to while I painted. One radiates, one attends, and neither is the lesser for it.

The black takes up most of this canvas, and it had to. It isn't background, it's the silence that makes the relationship readable. Without it you'd see two objects. With it you see something closer to a choice.

The person who lives with this work knows something about quiet loyalty, about showing up for someone who may not notice, about deciding that's enough.
